A RELUCTANT ADVENTURER'S LEGACY- FROM FATHER TO SON
March 2003- In 1998, Laurent Rejto, filmmaker, writer and co-founder of the
Woodstock Film Festival, set out to translate and publish his father Thomas
Rejtošs book, The Reluctant Adventurer, a timely novel about four buddies, their
war stories, and the resiliency of friendship, and hope. The book had originally
been published in France as Aventurier malgre soi at
Editions Gallimard where then editor, Nobel laureate Albert Camus, championed
the book.
Nineteen ninety-eight also marked the year that the elder Rejto embarked upon
his most reluctant adventure -- against the ravages of prostate cancer. Over the
course of the battle, his body withered but in his gaze Laurent could still see
the mischief of childhood, the vacillation of adolescence and the ultimately
triumphant bellow of long-life. The expanded English edition would be published
seven days prior to Thomas Rejtošs death.
Upon first reading these adventures of love and war as a youngster, Laurent had
been enthralled by the escapades of this one-for-all group of pranksters.
Through his father's odyssey, he learned that good and evil usually plays out in
shades of gray and that laughter and courage are the only true rejoinders to
lifešs tragedies.
Through his fatheršs reluctant adventures, Rejto also traced the roots of his
heritage - his Grandmotheršs bittersweet smile, his father's caution and the
bravura of his father's friends - and he engaged his grandfather and other
relatives who had disappeared during the inexorable terror of night or the
illusory safety of day, from Budapestšs artillery-tattered apartments
and firing lines along the banks of the Danube. As a young man, Laurent would
later haunt the streets of his relatives, and the ghosts of these too-soon-lost
ancestors would reinvigorate him with pride and affection.
"From my father - The Reluctant Adventurer, I have learned respect for the
wrinkles of time and the endurance of man", states Rejto, "I have learned the
meaning of friendship and family, and as I have experienced my own travails, I
have learned to face them with my own bittersweet smile. And perhaps most
important of all, I have learned to listen for the laughter of
my own children."
The Reluctant Adventurer (isbn# 0972232400) published by Farmhouse Films, is
available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and select bookstores.
